Life is like a packet of M&Ms

Before the famous Forrest Gump quote, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates‘, I discovered this with M&Ms. I love M&Ms for various reasons. It’s tasty and crunchy, it really does melt in your mouth and not in your hands (except when you leave it under the sun for a while) and it looks really nice in a transparent bowl. Another reason is quite silly actually, I love guessing what color I will get whenever I pull out my hands from the packet. Even though the taste doesn’t make any difference, whenever I get all of the same color, it’s like winning a slot machine. Well, only you don’t get money out of it. It’s like having it all.. of the same color.

Back in the real world, it’s very often you see/hear people having it all (all of the same color of M&Ms) but very rare they really do. They have a luxurious job, fantastic spouse, perfect car, dream job, angelic children, wall full of academic scrolls, healthy as a horse. Picture perfect? Well, there is just one piece that would complete the puzzle, but isn’t there. Why? We might not know or see it put the person knows it. But he/she wishes to be content with it. I had a very interesting conversation with a dear friend about this. We came to a conclusion that really having it all (materially) would mean you have died and gone to heaven.

Another conclusion is that having it all is very subjective. If you keep on keeping scores among your friends and peers, you will end up waking up one day realizing you ate too much of M&Ms because you wanted so much of having all of the same color.. Having it all.. What you can do is just enjoy the M&Ms.

Life is just like a box of chocolates.. or a packet of M&Ms. You never know what you’re gonna get. If you’re really lucky, you might get all of the same color.. or maybe you can really have it all even with all different colors..
